Metrobus has been shortlisted for two UK Bus Awards: Top Shire Operator and Top National Bus Depot.

The Top Shire Operator award covers all areas outside the major UK cities and the shortlist also includes Go South Coast; Oxford Bus Company; Reading Buses and Stagecoach East Scotland.

The award is based on data including how operators maintain and improve customer relations, e.g. communicating with customers and using technology; the management of stakeholder relationships and partnerships (especially with local councils); market growth and development; employee relations and training; social responsibility and environmental performance.

The Top National Bus Depot award is open to bus depots or garages that operate buses on local bus services outside London. It’s for the depot which the judges consider delivers the highest operational standards to its customers.

The winning depot receives a cash prize to improve its facilities.

Judging criteria includes data on scheduled annual mileage; lost mileage as a percentage of scheduled mileage; punctuality; customer satisfaction and mystery traveller survey results; driver quality monitoring data and passenger complaints.

Each submission also had to set out how each depot would maintain and improve standards, develop and maintain team spirit, add value to the community and contribute to local and global environmental objectives.

Metrobus’ Crawley Depot is joined on the shortlist by Grimsby, Stagecoach East Midlands; Heckmondwike, Arriva Yorkshire; Intack, The Blackburn Bus Company; Newport, Isle of Wight; Go South Coast – Southern Vectis; St Andrews, Stagecoach East Scotland; Sharston, Stagecoach Manchester and Shrewsbury, Arriva Midlands.

Once the shortlist has been drawn up entries are assessed by ‘mystery travellers’ and other spot checks to monitor the standard of service delivery.

But we’ll have to wait until next month to find out the winner. The award presentation is on 20 November at Troxy, London.
